Leprechauns are one of the most widespread mascots used today.

Commercially images of these little green men are used on anything remotely Irish.

Originally leprechauns were dressed in red. That all changed during the 20th century. Leprechauns now are dressed in the color green.

These little green men are mostly harmless to humans. They can from time to time be mischievous and practical jokers.

They are known to be excellent shoemakers. They are the little people who make shoes for the fairies.

Leprechauns are not social creatures and quite difficult to find. They live in remote areas and underground.

They are very short and will be able to fit through small openings in the ground and in caves which humans cannot possibly enter.

It is easier to hear a leprechaun than to see one.

If you hear a faint tapping sound when walking in the countryside it is quite possible it may be the sound of a leprechaun making a shoe.

These little people dressed in green from Ireland gained a lot of publicity and popularity when the movie “Darby O’Gill and the Little People” was released in 1959.

Leprechauns are Fabulously Wealthy

Leprechauns are extremely rich. They earn good money from their shoemaker business.

The money they earn they stash away for safe keeping. Humans have always been on an eternal quest to find the hidden treasures.

Some legends also proclaim that these little people have a flair for finding all sorts of treasures humans buried in the ground for different reasons.

These little people claim all hidden assets they find in the ground.

An old folklore tells the tale that these little people tend to keep a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. It is a perfect spot because it is just about impossible to find.

Leprechauns May Grant You Three Wishes

If you are lucky enough to catch a leprechaun, he has clever ways to make you set him free. The most common story is that a leprechaun will grant you three wishes in exchange for his freedom.

Just be very careful what you wish for. Make sure your wishes are not to be misunderstood.

In one story we hear about a man who wished to be the ruler of a tropical island. His wish was immediately granted. He found himself all alone on a deserted tropical island.

Also make sure you never ask for more than three wishes. Making a fourth wish will wipe out all your previous wishes and your fourth wish will not be granted.

The Clever Leprechaun

The leprechauns are known to be quick thinkers and very smart.  One very well-known story illustrates this matter.

A young lad was lucky enough to capture a leprechaun. He refused to let him go before he revealed where his treasure was hidden.

The leprechaun had no chose but to agree. He instructed the lad to go deep into a forest.

Once inside the woods he pointed to a tree and proclaimed a treasure was buried deep underneath the tree.

The young lad realized he would need a shovel of some kind to dig up the treasure.

Looking around he feared it would be difficult to find the exact place when he returned with a shovel.

He came up with a brilliant idea. The lad tied a red ribbon around the tree. He then made the leprechaun promise not to remove the ribbon.

Again the leprechaun honored his wish. The lad hurried away to fetch his digging gear. When he returned the leprechaun was gone and every tree in the forest had a red ribbon tied around its tree trunk.

The young lad never found the hidden treasure.
